Novelty–is defined as “something new or unusual, the quality or state of being novel, pursuing newness, a small article mainly intended for adornment, something that often provides fleeting amusement and is based on a theme.”
I have been reading about some of the connections linked between novelty and happiness and thought to share this simple concept. Oftentimes when queried about goals people will answer “I want to be happy” yet rarely define what or where that feeling or experience will be created. The assumptions are often towards a bigger house, more vacations, more ‘stuff,’ having children, getting married, etc. While bigger life goals certainly define and create experiences and new dynamics also consider the simplicity of adding novelty to your list of goals.
Pursuing a novelty might be creating a passion for experiencing rare teas and coffees, comparing all our Inspired Home luxury soy candles http://inspiredhome.com/standard-candles.html to determine your favorite fragrance (haha), following the work of a particular artist or writer, having a quirky interest or building a hobby based on a niche. Our need to experience fresh new challenges and engage with change can provide both challenge, interest and ultimately happiness. Defining your own interests and turning away from the mass media marketing and common assumptions about “I’ll be happy if…..[I'm copying others that {seem} to act happy]” simply will not do the trick.
We need to carve out our our ideas individually or as a families and build out our own uniqueness. Expect interests to change and rotate at different stages in life but be open to constant exploration. Mindful cultivation. The simplicity of adding some novelty to your life may be just the thing needed as we move towards the spring season. Building novelty into your life need not cost extra money in your budget as well. It is a great conversation question to ask friends and family members….learning unlikely places where joy is found. What novelties do you have a hankering to explore?
